Who are youth? What is childhood?

Three “characterizations” about young people discussed are:

  1. Age
  2. Biology
  3. Society
Age, is shaped by the attempt to regulate young people's transition into adulthood, society assigns grades to a large number of youth depending on their age, or more precisely, the year they were born.

Biology, shapes the idea that some behavioral changes brought on by hormones make young people unpredictable, which they then utilize as justification for their strict control.

Society, is the idea that social standards are tightly maintained because society fears the impact of peers on them.

A thought for greater inquiry: Teens' dependence on peer groups is a result of social and institutional arrangements that physically separate young people from the adult world, placing them in schools for over six hours a day.

Own experience: I remember not socially finding some connections with my immediate family members in my age group but was encouraged to seek out and remain in that "group". I had rather preferred to be with different members that were older and/or further matured members but boundaries were encouraged not to be crossed.
